Are you suffering from rapid hair loss? If so you are not the only one. The cases of rapid hair loss both amongst young men and women have been rising sharply in India currently. The reasons for this are many. These range from genetic factors like Androgenic alopecia to stress and poor diet. In recent years treating hair loss with hair transplantation has been a very popular form of hair loss treatment. In this blog therefore we will try to explain to you about the hair transplantation methods which are being used now.
Hair transplantation methods:
Hair transplantation is a process where in hair grafts/ follicles are removed from the back of the head and placed in areas where scanty growth of hair or the bald areas of the head is. The hair grafts or follicles at the back of the head are more resistant to hormonal changes. There are mainly two methods to remove the grafts – Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).
The Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) method
In the Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) method, a strip of scalp is cut out from the back of the head and is dissected into individual grafts.
The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).
In the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method of hair transplantation involves taking the individual follicular units / grafts from the back of the head. These are done one by one by cutting around it through a tiny specialized machine and removing them. The method is quite tedious. It might take a few hours. But is painless after a few numbing injections are given.
The rest of the procedure remains the same in either method. In both tiny sites are created using very fine blades and needles in the balding areas of the scalp. This is done after numbing them again with local anesthetic injections. These grafts are then inserted in the sites on the front of the head where there is lack of hair.
Advantages of each Hair transplantation methods
Advantages of FUT method:
- With a few sitting a large areas of baldness can be covered.
- The resection rate (the grafts that get cut whilst removing) may be lesser providing superior results. But this resection rate depends to a large extent on the competence of the surgeon and his/ her team.
Advantages of FUE method:
- Here the hair transplantation done does not require taking an full strip of scalp from the back of the head like in strip surgery. Thus as such there are no major cuts or stitches.
- It requires less recovery time. In many cases the patient may even return to work the next day itself.
- There is no linear scar.
Both methods are widely used for hair transplantation. However you need to find out from your hair transplant surgeon which would be more suitable based on your hair loss condition.
