Eyelash hair transplantation or implant is a relatively new procedure to treat the upper eyelid with no or sparse eyelash due to genetics, alopecia, trauma, surgery or burns.
Donor hair comes from back of head, size of hair strip being 1 inch long and 2 mm wide. Donor site is sutured. Healed donor incision is easily concealed by existing hairs.
Strip of hair is sutured into upper eyelid, involving placement of 25 to 50 hairs. Whole procedure is performed under mild oral sedative and it takes around 2 hours. Patient resumes his normal activities after 2 hours.
Patient has to understand that implanted hairs need to be manually curled and to be trimmed regularly.
